In a very challenging 2019 legislative session, many in the Ag community are walking away from Olympia saying that education and outreach is the key.  Michelle Hennings Executive Director for the Washington Association of Wheat Grower says one of the best examples of this was when senator John McCoy said the farming community in Washington does not pay taxes.  Hennings noted that proves the disconnect that exists between rural and urban Washington.

“You know we have real estate taxes, personal property taxes, taxes on fertilizer, fuel taxes, employment taxes, and it was offensive that, you know, there are some people that think we don’t pay taxes at all.”

Hennings noted the farming community cannot be silent and must share their story not only with lawmakers but with others about the positive things farming is doing in the 21st century, and how many lives are impacted by the Ag industry in Washington and across the Northwest.
