Longtime Ag Senator Chuck Grassley is expected to announce this week if he plans to stay as Senate Judiciary chair or take the helm of Senate Finance, a key panel for farm trade.  An outspoken advocate for agriculture, Grassley, was not ready to say before the election which panel he’ll chair.

“Because I’m the senior member of judiciary, finance, and budget.  Which one would I take?  I’m not going to say that until November the 7th.”

Grassley’s office says the Senator could announce his decision this week.  And opting for Finance, a panel he previously headed, would be more important for agriculture than Judiciary, including on trade and tax issues.

American Farm Bureau tax adviser Pat Wolff:

“Senator Grassley’s always looked out for farmers when it came to tax measures.  He’s a longtime member of the finance committee, he’s been chairman in the past, and it would be good news for agriculture if he would resume chairmanship of the finance committee.”
