USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service is looking to hire more veterinarians.

“All across the country, we have vacancies and we have approximately 100 vacancies,” said Carmen Rotenberg, USDA Acting Deputy Undersecretary for FSIS.  She said that figure represents a roughly 10% vacancy rate.  She said one of the struggles is many graduating from veterinary school look to go into the small animal business, such as cats, dogs and other pets.  Rotenberg said they need vets who specialize in larger animals.

“Animal husbandry and food producing animals.  There are schools that have large programs for that, and we want those schools to know that we are a large employer of veterinarians.”

The USDA will hold recruitment events this summer in an effort to fill those openings.
