Farmers Encouraged To Participate In Taste Washington Day
Wednesday is the 8th annual Taste Washington Day. A day created by the Washington state Department of Agriculture and Office of Public Instruction to highlight locally grown foods, and teach young people from where our food comes. Chris Iberle with the WSDA’s Farm to School program, says the day also highlights how school districts and the farming community can collaborate. He added both the agricultural and education communities love Taste Washington Day.
“It’s a great day to set aside some time to celebrate Washington Agriculture, so we see tons of photo, and we often encourage farmers and schools alike to post photos. Kids are obviously super excited to have something special happen in the cafeteria.”
Iberle said Taste Washington Day can benefit farmers now, and well into the future.
“It is a great opportunity for farmers to start new partnerships with school districts and connect with participating schools. So, farmers are selling their products directly to schools, or through a processor or a distributor, or again, coming in to do education and just be part of the day and part of their community.”
In fact, Governor Jay Inslee has proclaimed October 3rd as Taste Washington Day.
