Farmers Call on Congress For Tax Reform

Farmers took to DC this week to testify before the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Tax Policy.  They said it was important that law makers look at tax reforms for farm businesses.  Scott VanderWal, a South Dakota farmer, presented the unique challenges farm and ranch businesses face to lawmakers Thursday.  VanderWal, who is also vice president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, says tax reform is vital for the ag community.

“Just about every business decission that we make is tempered or affected by the test consequence, and those things don’t always fit together positively.”

In his testimony VanderWal told lawmakers that reducing the tax burden on farmers and ranchers would help improve their businesses.  He added, this is a story everyone in the ag community should tell.

“I’m doing what I can as an individual, testifying before Congress and letting them know what my personal story is, and how taxation affects the individual farmers and ranchers.  So, we would encourage everyone to let their policy makers what their personal story is.  That is a very important thing that people in Congress listen to," VanderWal said.
