The Washington state Chapter of the Farmer Veterans Coalition will host a Meet and Greet Thursday at the Chelan County Fairgrounds in Cashmere.  The event, dubbed SPLASH, is an opportunity for veterans to see what opportunities there are across Washington in agriculture.  Lourence Dormaier, an Army veteran, says many former service members struggle to find services or jobs outside of the metropolitan areas.

“And this is just something to say, hey, there is an organization here that wants to assist veterans, whether they are starting out or established and network together with each other and kind of help each other out.”

Dormaier said the Farmer Veterans Coalition works to fit the needs of both the former military and agriculture communities.

“We have a lot of farmers out there at retirement age and no one to take over, and there’s a lot of veterans out there, and it fits perfectly.  I think it’s a growing trend, and we’re an organization that has been needed in Washington state for a long time.”

Dormaier said Thursday’s SPLASH is open to former military, current farmers or anyone interested in helping vets when they return home.  It gets underway at 5:30 p.m.
