A bill that cleared the Washington state House this session, would change the priority of how Beef Check-off dollars are used.  Representative Tom Dent, one of the chief sponsors of HB 2073, told the Washington Ag Network the discussions started last year in the Senate, where lawmakers discussed altering the check-off’s priorities.  Dent said between the 2016 session and this year, he spoke with beef producers across the state about what they wanted from the Check-off.  He said while many are happy with the check-off itself, many would like to see the funds used for something other that just the promotion of beef products.

“It would appear that most of the folks out there, in our world are eating beef anyway, so it seems like maybe we should promote the industry a little more and the product a little bit less."

Dent added many in the industry would also like additional check-off dollars to be used on research.Click Here to learn more about Dent’s legislation. House Bill 2073 has been introduced in the Senate as is currently in committee.
