As we wrap up another school year, many of our area seniors are now focused on life after high school.  And many of those students are looking at a live in agriculture.  Three Chiawana High School graduates were recently awarded a list of scholarships, including Alex Hall, receiving the Lyle Holt Scholarship, the Wilbur-Ellis Ag Business scholarship and the REAL Ag scholarship, totaling roughly $4,500.  Hall told the Washington Ag Network these scholarships mean much more than a reduction in paying for college.

“Yeah, a lot of scholarships are just an application, but my Lyle Holt one for example, we had to do an entire speech and it was a competition.  And they have you do stuff based on agriculture to see that you’re really in to that and that is actually what you want to do and you’re interested in it, and you know what’s going on and what it’s all about.”

Another recipient includes Randi Gilmore, who won the Lyle Holt as well as the Real Ag Scholarship.  She said she wants to study and learn more about GMOs.

“As I’ve gone through High school I’ve gone to conferences with my dad and even attended some FFA events where they’ve discussed this topic further and I’ve done my own further research  because it’s just something I’ve learning about.”
