Canada Faces New U.S. Tariffs as Trade Talks Intensify

Canada and the United States are stepping up trade talks ahead of a new round of U.S. tariffs scheduled to take effect August 19th.  The new tariffs would impose a 50% duty on a range of Canadian goods, adding pressure as the two countries negotiate their future trading relationship.

Canada and Mexico have called for the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement to be extended for another 16 years.  The Trump administration instead chose to move the agreement to rolling annual reviews.

Canadian dairy farmers are also urging Prime Minister Mark Carney not to make additional concessions on the country’s supply management system.  The United States has repeatedly criticized Canadian dairy market access.  Dairy Farmers of Canada said Canada has already made several concessions during previous negotiations, only to face additional demands.

Canadian officials say they remain committed to protecting supply management as trade talks continue ahead of the tariff deadline.
