The discovery of bird flu in Tennessee this past weekend could have far reaching ramifications depending on decisions by other countries.

USDA Chief Veterinarian Dr. Jack Shere said notification to other countries started on Monday.

“And then the feedback will start to come in from our trading partners as to what restrictions they’ll put in place on Tennessee, either statewide, county wide or the entire United States based on this. Each country will approach this differently. We’ve got many of the countries to agree to restrict it only to the state or the county. Some countries will restrict all of the U.S.”

Shere said they have been negotiating with Russia, China and a few other countries who are more likely to ban all of the U.S. poultry from coming into the country.
