A new law was passed by the Washington State Legislature that provides some protections to farms and other ag businesses that also participate in agritourism.

Washington State Farm Bureau Government Policy Director Tom Davis said the bill will provide extra protections against frivolous lawsuits.

“It was wonderful to see that even urban legislators were supporting this bill and I think people still have a soft spot in their hearts for farms and opportunities, especially for kids, to get out an enjoy a farm setting.”

Agritourism do need to follow certain guidelines regarding signage upon entering the farm and anywhere there might be activity that could possibly lead to injuries.

Davis said that inspired the Farm Bureau to create signs that any of farmer, whether they are a member of the farm bureau or not, can purchase and post on their property.

“The bill itself provides very specific language and as only state government can do, it even tells you how big the lettering has to be; it has to be an inch tall so people can easily read it. Our sign meets all of those government requirements of the letter of the law, even the size of the letters of the law. We were very careful to make sure that these signs meet that requirement so we provide the protection our farmers need.”

Davis called this agritourism bill a win-win because it allows protections for farmers but also still provides many opportunities for people to see where their food comes from.
