Ag Center of Excellence Works To Impact Variety of Students

The Ag Center of Excellence at Walla Walla Community College continues to work to attract a wide variety of young people to the ag industry.  Center Director Bill Griffith told the Washington Ag Network the next generation must understand agriculture is not just farming.

“We’re talking about all of the different operations that go into it with marketing, and accounting and communications and IT, all of those things are really great careers.”

Ag Center’s Communications Director Lindsey Williams says while they try to reach nontraditional ag students, it’s also important to ensure those who grew up on a farm get the skills and training they need.

“We want to make sure they are coming out with the education necessary to continue to be progressive in agriculture.  So, it’s a really interesting situation to look at, and it’s really a lot of fun.”

Both Williams and Griffith said the agriculture industry must communicate with young people about where farming is going into the future, noting it cannot just be educators to share the message.
