AFBF Praises Committee Approval Of Farm Bill 2.0
Last week, the House Agriculture Committee approved Chair G.T. Thompson’s Farm Bill 2.0 by a 34-17 bipartisan vote. Brian Glenn, director of government affairs for the American Farm Bureau Federation, said it was a lengthy markup process for the legislation, which included debate on over 100 amendments by both parties.
Glenn added the committee amended and debated all twelve farm bill titles.
“The chairman welcomed amendments to be considered, as long as they maintained budget neutrality for the Bill," Glenn said. "The bill now includes several new bipartisan amendments, from supporting nutrition incentives for fresh fruits, vegetables, and dairy, to updating rural broadband programs.”
This Farm Bill Needs To Be A Priority
Now that the House Agriculture Committee has approved the bill, Glenn says the ball is in House leadership’s court.
“House leadership scheduling time on the calendar for the bill to be voted on the floor," Glenn said. "And we urge House leaders to continue the momentum and bring this bill to a vote on the floor. This is truly an opportunity for both chambers to work on a bipartisan basis, to do the right thing.”
By the way, seven Democrats joining Republicans in supporting the legislation late last week.
