More than one month ago, the House Agriculture Committee passed, on a bipartisan vote, the Farm, Food, and National Security Act.  Brian Glenn, director of government affairs for the American Farm Bureau Federation, said it’s time for Congress to act.

“This shows momentum for Congress to get this done," Glenn noted.  "In terms of next steps, House leadership now must bring the farm bill to the floor to be considered and voted on.  We are also urging Senate Ag Committee leadership to advance their own farm bill work as well.”

Glenn said the farm bill should be a priority, now that Congress is back from its Easter recess.  He added lawmakers, and the general public doesn’t appreciate that American farmers are is still working off of the third extension of the 2018 Farm Bill, and now is the time to get new, updated legislation in place.

“While we are very appreciative of the important farm safety net enhancements made in the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act, those updates don't kick into effect until later this year, in October," Glenn said.  "Farmers deserve an updated and modernized five-year farm bill that properly tackles the challenges of today and tomorrow.”
