Rural America boasts a proud history of celebrating and honoring veterans.  Celebrating Veterans Day this week, AARP is doing the same.

“Veterans come from all parts of the nation, especially in rural America, they are celebrated fort their work overseas and back home on the farm or ranch, or in their communities," said the AARP’s Sean Voskuhl.  "Rural America proudly honors veterans as does AARP with special programs to assist and honor them.”

One of the ways to honor veterans is to donate to charity organizations.  However, Voskuhl said, its important to make sure those charities using veteran names are legit.

“Unfortunately scammers often use the guides of veterans charities to take your hard earned money.  Make sure you research a charity that you’ve never heard of before, and know what they are before you make a donation.  Visit Give.org or charitynavigator.org to ensure that your money goes to help our veterans and not the criminals.”

Voskuhl said scammers also like to target veterans.  He said it’s a good idea to help watch out for the veterans in your life.  Voskuhl noted one in three victims of investment fraud scams are veterans.  The AARP has resources and information to help veterans stave off scam efforts.  To learn more, visit the AARP's Website.
