Wheat prices remain down and it has grabbed the attention of many wheat growers including National Association of Wheat Growers President David Schemm.

But what can be done? Schemm has one idea.

“We need to get engaged with our foreign markets and trade agreements. 50 percent of our wheat in this country is exported, so obviously that has a huge impact upon the price we receive for our wheat crop.”

Part of the problem is that the low prices are driving growers to not produce at the same levels as they had previously.

Schemm said that’s opening our trade relationships up to trouble.

“The challenge that the U.S. has is that when we have not had this production, the countries that were buying from us now starts to look to somebody else that they can get that wheat from and they start going to that other country and that’s a market that we lose. Again, there is not the impact on price because there’s somebody else that can meet that demand.”
