After a slow start, the snowpack season through the Northwest and West Coast has picked up according to USDA Meteorologist Brad Rippey.

That means good things for water supplies, regardless of its form Rippey said.

“We are looking at virtually across the board above normal accumulations of precipitation, so even in areas that have not picked up the snow, reservoirs are responding and we are seeing some benefit.”

Some of the snow has come as particularly powdery which means low moisture content, but Rippey said the West and Northwest are starting to finally break the bonds of 2015 and beyond.

“That has chipped away at some of the long-term drought that we have seen piling up over the years.”

January can be a big snowpack accumulation month, so many farmers are hoping that the month is particularly white in the mountains.
