Was 2024 A Record Warm Year?
The numbers are in from the National Centers for Environmental Information.
“As it played out, December of 2024 ended up being the 4th warmest December on record, with an average temperature that was more than 5 1/2 degrees above the 20th century mean,” said USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey. And he said when you add December’s numbers to the other 11 months of the year.
“That was just enough to push 2024 to the warmest U.S. year on record with an annual average temperature of 55.5°F and that was 3 1/2 degrees above the 1901 to 2000, or 20th century mean. Number 1, a little less than 1/4 of a degree warmer than the record that had previously been set in 2012.”
Also notable, Rippey pointed out, 2024 takes the place of the Dust Bowl era 1934 on the list of top ten, all time warmest years.
