Phillip Gross, a Warden wheat farmer, was named the national winner of the National Wheat Foundation’s wheat yield contest.

Dan Mills, a Umatilla County grower, had the top yield in irrigated spring wheat.

The contest was designed for growers to use advanced seed varieties, innovative techniques and cutting-edge growing practices.

Gross had the best yield for the contest with 192.85 bushels per acre, which was 216 percent above the county average, using Keldin, a hard red variety from WestBred.

All the winners will be honored at the 2017 Commodity Classic.
