UW Ag Tech Startup Looks To Help Farmers

A University of Washington startup focused on improving crop production and soil health has captured the top prize in this year's Dempsey Startup Competition.  Seattle-based BioBead won $25,000 for its agricultural technology that uses biodegradable pellets containing naturally occurring soil bacteria and fungi.

The company said the treatment helps crops absorb key nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus more efficiently.  BioBead has already been testing the technology with growers producing wheat, tomatoes, lettuce and corn.  Early results show increased crop yields while reducing the need for costly fertilizers, a potential benefit for farmers facing rising input costs.

The startup was selected from a record 186 entries from across the Pacific Northwest.

BioBead's founders say the technology aims to strengthen soil health while helping producers improve productivity and sustainability.
