The next round of NAFTA negotiations takes place this week, but the wheat industry is pushing the U.S. Trade Representative’s office to negotiate new deals as well.

U.S. Wheat Associates and the National Association of Wheat Growers noted that the Korea-U.S. trade agreement is barely a quarter of the way through implementation and that the focus on renegotiation is taking away from other potential deals.

NAWG CEO Chandler Goule said when TPP went away they were promised bilateral agreements that have not materialized and that, “USTR has limited resources — it is time to get past plowing the same fields and start opening ground in new markets.”

Goule said that the U.S. is watching the world pass us by on trade agreements.
