USDA Participates in Conference on Combating Global Food Insecurity
The USDA participated in a semi-annual on global food insecurity this week.
Deputy Undersecretary Alexis Taylor said with the passing of the Global Food Security Act they, “Really thought it was a good time to bring our partners, USDA, USAID, private industry and NGO community and our stakeholders together to really talk about what is our long-term strategy for global food security and how are we working together really to achieve those goals.”
Among the challenges and ideas Taylor discussed was climate-smart producing, open data and information and women farmers who make up anywhere between 40-70 percent of farmers.
“How do women play into that and help that along when there are unique challenges. In a lot of the world women don’t have the same access to land, the same inheritance rights as men. So if they are the ones farming, if they can’t actually own that land how does that impact their decision on improving conservation practices, investing in better technologies, new seed technologies, those types of things.”
