Over 180 projects nationwide are recipients of new USDA grants designed to expand and strengthen local and regional food systems.

“The funding that we've announced is $64 million for a total of 185 projects around the country," said Under Secretary for marketing and regulatory programs Jenny Moffitt.  "These projects encompass three different grant programs: 1.) the farmers market promotion program 2.) the local food promotion program 3.) the regional food systems partnership program.”

Moffitt said the projects receiving grant monies range from farmers markets at roadside stands to relationship building between local producers and institutions such as schools and hospitals that could become markets.

“Connecting the dots, a little bit more creating linkages between producers and consumers and so it's shortening the supply chain and making them more direct supply chain from a producer to consumer.”
