In a joint statement, U.S. Wheat Associates and the National Association of Wheat Growers stressed the importance of the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement, also known as KORUS, and pushed for the U.S. to stay in.

Ritzville grower, and U.S. Wheat Chairman Mike Miller said, “Any disruption in the relationship wheat growers have built in Korea over more than 60 years gives Australia, Canada and even Russia an opening to move in and take business away from us at a time when we are all struggling to stay profitable.”

Korea was the third largest importer of U.S. wheat in the 2015/16 marketing year which runs from June 1st to May 31st.

On Friday, September 1st, President Trump instructed staff to prepare to withdraw from the trade agreement with Korea.
