The World Trade Organization will be meeting in Brazil next week [Dec. 10-13] for their 11th WTO Ministerial Conference and U.S. Wheat, along with 13 other ag groups, is hoping U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer will defend U.S. interests at the meeting.

The first issue in a letter from the ag groups to Lighthizer is WTO’s efforts to exempt price support programs tied to public stock procurement, something they call, “one of the most trade distorting forms of domestic support for agriculture,” noting that it could lead a much more distorted global marketplace.

They also expressed concerns over domestic support commitments, while at the same time praising the dispute settlement system and stressing its importance.

The full letter can be read on U.S. Wheat's website.
