U.S. beef exports began to arrive in Brazil recently after 13 years of being banned for discoveries of BSE.

Clay Hamilton, Agriculture Minister-Counselor at the U.S. Embassy said it was much anticipated.

“Brazil has full confidence in the U.S. system and they recognize the safety of our program and so they’re very anxious to import high quality U.S. beef.”

The first shipment was valued at $150,000.

Hamilton said that is a small fraction of what could be.

“Based on current orders, we’re looking at anywhere from $30-50 million in annual sales.”

The World Health Organization released a report last year that said the U.S. is a negligible risk for BSE in our cattle.
