Terroir Tourism Changing Ag Industry
A study by a WSU professor shows that the idea of terroir tourism, or focusing on the attributes of a specific and smaller location, is growing prominence in ag tourism.
Byron Marlowe said there are now many areas and farms that are gaining reputations for a specific variety or flavor which could be a major draw.
“I do believe that because of this we’re seeing the opportunity for more tourism in agriculture rich states like Washington.”
Marlowe said some of that ties into the concept of knowing where your food comes from and visiting it as the origin spot.
This could bring some much earned respect to the individual farmers and agriculture areas according to Marlowe.
“In the case of the farmer or the agriculture-based business, I believe that they are under recognized for what they could be as far as a tourism product.”
This could mean fewer vacations to far off destinations and more local stops at the area farm, winery and much more.
