Taste Washington Day Celebrates Farm-To-School Connections

For the 7^th year in a row, the Washington State Department of Agriculture will mark Taste Washington Day.  The statewide event partners farms and school to feature Washington–grown foods in school cafeteria meals.  WSDA’s Chris Iberle said Taste Washington is about farmers reaching out impacting the next generation of consumers.

“We work with schools and support them to serve local Washington grown foods on their menu on October 4^th or on another day throughout National Farm to School month in October.”

At this point, 37 school districts and 48 farms are participating in Taste Washington Day.  Iberle noted they use October 4^th to teach kids from where food comes.

“They also are working with their school gardeners, maybe they’re doing education in the classroom around food and agriculture, all of that happening on Taste Washington Day, on October 4^th, but also throughout the school year.”

In addition to the WSDA and Washington State Nutrition Association marking October 4^th as Taste Washington Day, in a proclamation, Governor Jay Inslee declared October 4^th an opportunity to provide a variety of nutritious fruits, vegetables, meats and more.
