Swine Day Helps Producers Face Challenges

The new Veterinary Feed Directive will be a major part of the 2017 Swine Day presentations that takes place February 3^rd at the Pillar Grill in Moses Lake.

WSU’s Sarah Smith said VFD will make major impacts regardless of the size of the hog farm.

“Even if they’re small, they’re not going to be able to access certain feeds like they have through feed companies without a veterinary feed directive. We’re going to talk to them about what the law is, but we’re also going to provide them with some management techniques in case they can’t find a veterinarian to help write that VFD.”

There will also certifications on pork quality assurance, feral pigs and the impact of the new Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation laws.

Smith said because the swine industry in Washington is small, there can be a challenge in getting the best information, experts or latest research.

“This way they can get some of the cutting-edge research news, but also make sure that they’re up to date so that they’re as current as producers from large pork producing states.”

The early registration deadline, which saves $15 on the event, is Friday, January 27^th.
