USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack said he hopes the conversations start the right way.

“The conversation in 2011-12 started with we have to save money. The first way to start this conversation should be; what is the need? What is the total need?”
Vilsack noted that the conversation on the last farm bill, because it focused on saving money, pit commodities and commissions against each other. This next farm bill, Vilsack hopes, will instead address the needs of the industry with creative solutions.
