On Wednesday, the Washington senate approved a resolution recognizing the student members of the Washington FFA Association.  The resolution sponsored by Sunnyside Republican Jim Honeyford, recognizes the FFA members for the work to combine agriculture education, science, leadership and career skills.

“I am so proud of these kids for their commitment to agricultural education and public service,” said Honeyford, who serves on the Senate Agriculture, Water, Trade and Economic Development Committee. “Nationally, FFA promotes citizenship, volunteerism, patriotism, and cooperation through approximately 482,000 service hours – and as we pointed out in the resolution – that equates to an economic impact of over $10.9 million. And we have some of most highly recognized FFA chapters in the country.

“I was happy to sponsor this resolution recognizing all of their hard work and achievement.”

According to Senate Resolution 8621, National FFA week is celebrated annually nationwide during the week of George Washington's birthday, in celebration of his legacy as an agriculturalist, and to emphasize the importance of agriculture to FFA members. The celebration is recognized by more than 9,000 FFA members statewide.

The National FFA Organization was founded in 1928 with the mission to prepare future generations for the “challenges of feeding a growing population.” While originally focused solely on future farmers of America, the FFA Organization has adapted to address the concerns of future biologists, future chemists, future veterinarians, future engineers and future entrepreneurs of America, too.
