The Washington Wine Industry Foundation is offering a scholarship that will work as a month-long paid sabbatical to someone in the wine industry who is under 40, been in the industry at least five years, and passionate to expand their knowledge.

Vicky Scharlau said the Bill Powers Sabbatical Fund honors its namesake’s interest and desire to find new and better ways to make wine.

“For a month, they travel to some other portion of the world that’s wine producing so they can learn something more about either grape growing or wine making that will further not only their career, but help elevate the quantity and quality of insights in Washington State.”

The award is up to $5,000 and will cover travel and education expenses.

Scharlau said the winner will have to design their own curriculum, get permission from their employer to be gone a month and lay out projected expenses from the travel and from any learning possibilities.
