Potato Virus Y at Alarmingly High Rate
WSU researchers are warning potato growers to plant certify seed tubers as they see an “alarming number” of Alturas potatoes infected with Potato Virus Y.
Regional Potato, Vegetable and Seed Crops Specialist Carrie Wohleb says, “It is tempting to purchase seed potatoes without considering the virus load when a desired potato variety is in short supply, but it may cost you $$ in the long run.”
Potato Virus Y can significantly reduce yield, cause problems in quality if infected.
Wohleb says the virus is likely originating in seed potatoes.
