At the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue spoke about the future of crop insurance when it comes to the 2018 Farm Bill.

Perdue said the 2014 Farm Bill made good progress to help an insurance-based risk management strategy but it wasn’t perfect.

“Obviously we know that dairy and cotton didn’t fare as well in the farm bill as they would like so there’ll be some tweaks for both of those, probably separating the producer from the produced; cows from milk, cotton from lint and seed in those kinds of areas.”

USDA has given data along with other resources to inform them of the various aspects of crop insurance and the farm bill.

Still, Perdue said there is only so much he can do.

“I can’t speak for Congress. I don’t want to predetermine what they’re going to do but those are the kinds of things we are talking about.”

Negotiations are underway for the 2018 Farm Bill.
