Perdue: President Has NAFTA President Right Where He Wants Them

Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue sees opportunities in the linking of proposed steel and aluminum tariffs to ongoing NAFTA negotiations.

"I don't know if we should be probably soothed by the fact that he has told Mexico and Canada this may be the way to get the NAFTA deal done, using steel tariffs in that way," Perdue said.

He said the agriculture sector is right to be concerned but that there are also opportunities.

"I plan to tell the President that he has got them just where he wants them, and lets use this off-balance technique here to decide what we would like in exchange for that, whether it is Mexico, Canada or our EU partners, as well," Perdue added.

The new tariffs signed by the President, will be in effect starting March 23 and are by definition only temporary.
