OSU Report Looks At Climate Change
Oregon State University researchers led an international coalition in developing a report on climate change. And researchers say the data warns of an escalating crisis. Previous reports looked at a few factors causing climate change. OSU's Dr. Lillian Gregg says this report takes a wider view.
"The goal of our report is to really focus on 35 different planetary vital signs that we keep track of year by year and report on to see if they're changing."
25 of the 35 indicators are at record extremes. They include record land and sea temperatures, all-time low levels of ice in Greenland and Antarctica, and over 2,300 heat-related deaths last year in the U.S. One recommendation is a global carbon price on items that produce more greenhouse gas emissions.
"Those products cost a little bit more, and so the consumer would therefore want to buy the cheaper product, they would go and buy something that uses less carbon emissions in order to produce the product."
The report will be considered at the “United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change” in November.
