Last week, by a 399-5 vote, the House of Representatives passed the Secure Rural Schools Reauthorization Act.  Eastern Oregon’s Cliff Bentz says timber dependent communities need the support, because of the impact Spotted Owl restrictions caused.

"When society enacts laws that seemingly benefit the broader public, but end up harming small communities, society must assume responsibility for that harm," Bentz noted.  "This is what this bill partially accomplishes."

Democratic Oregon Congresswoman Val Hoyle also voted Yes last week, but says it's not the end of the road.

"We still have a long way to go to deliver on the investments and job opportunities that rural America needs and deserves," she said.  "It's one of my top priorities in Congress, I know along with many of my colleagues."

President Trump's Big Beautiful Bill passed earlier this year did not include money to renew the program.
