Earth Day is this Saturday, though for the Oregon Department of Agriculture that’s just one of 365, 366 in leap years, Earth Days.

Ray Jaindl, ODA’s Director of Natural Resource Programs said they take Earth Day seriously of course, but their work is a group effort.

“We do this in collaboration with landowners and local communities– a combination of both– but intimately involved with landowners because it is something that is in their favor, to have an environment that’s productive.”

The ODA has worked for several years on programs that are designed to protect natural resources and enhance the environment.

Jaindl said they will it’s easy to celebrate Earth Day for the ODA because of how connected the department is to protecting the environment.

“Our mission statement is to maintain our environment for future generations and we do that by promoting agriculture but ensuring it’s done in a manner that provides for these long term natural resource conservation efforts that we are looking to achieve.”

Earth Day has been celebrated on the 22nd of April since 1970.
