The Good Food Institute has filed a petition with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to allow manufacturers of plant-based products to be able to use the label milk.

National Milk Producers Federation President and CEO Jim Mulhern said, “Nothing has happened in the last 20 years that makes it OK to combine plant or nut powders with water, sugar, emulsifiers, stabilizers, and other chemicals, and call it ‘milk,’” noting that it would further mislead consumers.

GFI says that enforcement of milk standards that require the source be an animal are anti-competitive.

FDA has rules in place that state anything that is labeled as milk must come from an animal.
