NFU Says Producers Lose in Bayer-Monsanto Deal
President of the National Farmers Union Roger Johnson is concerned with a potential deal that would have Bayer AG purchase Monsanto.
Johnson highlighted recent mergers such Syngenta and ChemChina as well as Dow and DuPont as bad for farmers noting, “the onslaught of consolidation in agricultural inputs can impair research and development efforts and create barriers for independent crop input companies as well as for independent producers at a time when low-commodity prices and high input costs are straining the farm economy.”
Johnson believe that this will lead to fewer farmers, innovations and ultimately rural depopulation.
