Representative Dan Newhouse joined Republicans and Democrats last week, asking the Department of Homeland Security to extend the renewal deadline for DACA beneficiaries.  The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program has come under pressure after the Trump Administration said Congress has six months to address DACA or make it law.  Newhouse says while nothing can be done legislatively in the coming weeks, it is important to push the current renewal permit deadline from October 5th to January 15th, allowing young people to get their requests processed.

“I think that that is a fair request one that will allow them to be able to meet that deadline and the Administration I think as been giving us some positive signals in that direction.  They also want to provide the DACA folks flexibility in meeting the deadline.”

Newhouse said extending the renewal deadline also gives Congress more time to address DACA.  Newhouse adds those from the 5th District with whom he’s spoken say it’s important to adjust this deadline as soon as possible.

“There’s a lot of support for finding a legislative solution for the individuals that find themselves in this situation.”
