On Thursday, the USDA announce the details of the $16 billion Market Facilitation Program funding, aimed at help growers impacted by the ongoing trade war with China.  Central Washington’s Dan Newhouse announced that Northwest cherry growers will receive financial assistance, at a rate of 17 cents per pound.  He said cherry growers need relief from the additional pressures these tariffs have place on their operation.  Newhouse added during this now yearlong trade war, cherry growers have taken a brunt of the storm.

“So this is actually a second season that they’ve had to endure the challenges with this trade conflict that we have.  So, I’m happy that the Administration has listened to us and has continued to provide some of this needed support.”

 

For producers who applied in 2018, the payment limit will be $125,000.  For those who applied in 2019, the payment limit will be $250,000.  Thursday’s announcement comes on the heels of the USDA announcing millions of dollars for the Washington tree fruit industry, via the Ag Trade Promotion program.

 

Newhouse pointed out that with both the MFP and ATP funds, he worked successfully with Democrat senators Maria Cantwell.  He noted that the state’s delegation works well together on issues that impact the Evergreen State.

 

“And I’m proud to be able to reach across and work with folks on the other side of the isle for the betterment of the people I represent.”
