Estimates says 40% of the food in the United States will end up wasted, bound for a landfill.  In response the Trump Administration says it will focus on food waste reduction throughout the month of April.  Representative Dan Newhouse says it’s a worthwhile effort that he welcomes.

The Central Washington farmer notes that a lot of food produced in the U.S. is just thrown away and that is a waste of resources, efforts and time.  Newhouse added reducing food waste can also help other worthwhile federal programs.

"With the number of people that we’re helping to provide meals for through the SNAP program and other things, it’s truly a waste of a precious resource.”

Newhouse was quick to note reducing food waste will be a team efforts.

“I’m a co-chairman of the Congressional bipartisan food recovery caucus which is the fancy name for the caucus that deals in wasted food.  I share that responsibility with Congresswoman Chellie Pingree from the state of Maine.”

President Trump said food waste undermines environmental stewardship and the ability of Americans to lead healthier lives.
