Last week, the House Ag Committee unveiled the full text of the 2018 Farm Bill proposal.  It’s a proposal, according to Central Washington Representative Dan Newhouse is controversial with Republicans and Democrats.  He said conservative elements of the GOP take issue with crop insurance and other large ticket items.

For the Democrats, their chief issue is the changes made to the Nutrition program, namely SNAP.  Newhouse said Republicans are looking to change how SNAP operates to ensure it does not become a trap for individuals.

“That we are helping people pull themselves up out of poverty by providing more resources for training, for workforce reengagement, we’re asking people who are between the ages of 18 and 59 who are abled body to work at least 20 hours a week.”

For those that don’t work, Newhouse says job training is an option as well.  Newhouse said he’s confident something will move to replace the current Farm Bill.  But he also noted that he doesn’t believe any votes are being counted at this point.
