“Well, nobody wins in a government shutdown, and that has been illustrated very clearly,” said Representative Dan Newhouse.  The Central Washington Republican made those comments moments before the U.S. House voted Thursday in favor of a $328 billion spending package keeping the government open through September 30th.

Newhouse noted not only would another shutdown be bad for the country as a whole, but the Ag industry would be hit especially hard.  Newhouse said while this legislation does not have everything President Trump wanted, he calls the compromise a first step.

“Kind of a down payment if you will, on what the President would like to see as it relates to border security and other things.  Like I’ve said many of the people I’ve talked to, this has been the topic of conversation for three weeks, have no appetite to see another government shutdown.  We’d like to move forward from here.”

President Trump is expected to declare a national emergency at the southern border to bypass Congress and fund his border wall.  The move is setting the stage for a slew of legal challenges for the White House.
