March 1st through the 7th has been designated as National Weights and Measures week and it’s giving the Oregon Department of Agriculture a chance to highlight their work.

Manager of ODA’s Weights and Measures Program Steve Harrington said there is a lot of work to be done.

“So in Oregon right now, we’re looking at about $106 billion of goods and products that, at one point in their path from manufacture to sale, is getting weighed. They often get weighed multiple times as they make their way from the manufacturer to the consumer.”

Weights and measures are designed not only to protect the consumer, but also the business. Harrington said there are times where businesses can lose money if something is off.

“What we want to do is to make sure that device is treating everybody fairly. So essentially, the weighing device or the measuring device isn’t favoring anybody in the transaction. Everybody can safely forget about it and just be assured they are getting essentially what that device says they are getting.”

National Weights and Measures Week is just seven days, but ODA says the message remains the same all year long. Every time you go to a grocery store or fill up at a gas station, remember that they’re watching out for you.
