NAFTA Details Might Not Come Until Last Minute

Frustration might be the predominant feeling amongst people waiting to hear about NAFTA renegotiations, but don’t count Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue among them.

Perdue said it’s not uncommon to see these deals move slowly, at least at first.

“I think trade negotiations are a little bit like the way I do Christmas. I do my shopping on the 24^th. That’s typically when these negotiations get done, in the last throes, days of negotiation. Everyone works better with a timeline when it comes to negotiation.”

All sides have laid out their positions according to Perdue and where agreements is not currently met, they will move forward and negotiate.

For now, Perdue is preaching patience for producers.

“There’s going to be some anxious moments for our agricultural producers across the country. At the end of the day, I do believe we will get an agreement over NAFTA.”

The next renegotiation meetings are under way this week in Washington D.C.
