Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley is leading more than 30 of his colleagues in raising concerns about the USDA’s planned reorganization of the U.S. Forest Service.

In a letter co-signed by fellow Oregon Senator Ron Wyden, lawmakers warn the changes could further shrink the agency’s workforce and weaken its ability to manage public lands.  The letter points to recent staffing cuts and a 2025 survey showing declining performance.  The Forest Service oversees 193 million acres nationwide and provides support across more than 800 million acres of forestland.

The letter went on to urge caution, saying the proposed overhaul could impact more than 6,500 employees and further strain the agency’s mission.
