Medicaid Program Helps Oregonians Keep Cool
Oregonians stayed cooler and had cleaner air this summer, because of a program created by the Legislature. Warming temperatures and wildfires make it more important for Oregonians to have air conditioning and air filters. Oregon's Medicaid Director Emma Sandoe said some parts of the state are affected more than others.
“In rural areas, we see that often times, people have lower incomes, and we know that those are the areas that have been disproportionately impacted by wildfires over the last several years."
More than 10,000 air conditioners and air filters were distributed to low-income Oregonians this year. Sandoe said they're working to continue the program next year.
“The program that is available to Oregon Health Plan members, people can reach out to year-round to learn more and apply for those benefits, and we're working with the Oregon State legislature on the air conditioner and air filter program for 2025.”
Funding for the units came from the Legislature and a first-in-the-nation Medicare program to reduce health inequities and provide a way for Oregon Health Plan members to request devices.
