Conversations on the next farm bill continue in Washington D.C. and we could see a much bigger involvement of farmers than for the last bill.

Mary Kay Thatcher with the American Farm Bureau Federation recalls working on the 2014 Farm Bill.

“Anyone in farm groups really struggled back in the 2012-13 process to get farmers involved. I think prices were just a bit too good.”

That might have allowed the conversations around that farm bill to be about cutting spending by the USDA.

Now that commodity prices are so low, Thatcher is looking at the silver lining.

“Having low prices is going to mean we’ll get a lot more interest from our farmers in being active.”
